I was under the impression that one needed to a router with a fire wall
built in such as a hardware fire wall. I don't think the one I got for
50.00 from verizon meets that. I may take a look at the url you gave
for macafee fire wall. From what I understand from one of your
messages, the scripts allow you to more easely configure the software is
that correct?

A router automatically provides firewall protection because your
machine
has an IP address that is translated by the router and not available to
the
internet. What you found is the Microsoft XP firewall. It provides
protection against outgoing traffic, but not incoming. But if you use a

router and a good antivirus package, nothing should ever be able to get
on
your machine in the first place. But some people still like to use a
software firewall to block incoming traffic. You can buy Macafee at any

computer store, or download it from the internet at
http://us.mcafee.com/root/downloads.asp?cid=11345. You can download
trial
vfersions. I wasn't recommending it. because it works great with Jaws..

But it is being offered free to comcast customers. Free is good, smile.
If
you do try it, you can get the scripts from me.
If you have a router, are using ad ware, stop zilla, and AVG, I think
your
security is good.

Thanks for responding. One of your pryer messages to the list spoke
about macafee fire wall and some scripts you had for it. I wondering
where I could get the macafee fire wall program and the scripts you
mentioned. I am assuming they will be a good match for my needs and
jaws. Also, I am using a router between my wife's lap top and my desk
top, but I don't think it has any provision for fire wall protection,
nor do I know if Verizon's DSL has any fire wall protection. I al
noticed on my system tray a icon for windows security, and I under
windows has a fire wall do you know if that's any good? At present, I
am running the avg virus software I mentioned and have the addaware
software, I was wondering if you think my protection against viruses and
spyware is good. I figure the fire wall application can provide another
layor of protection against other issues. I was also running a program
called stopzilla which was for protection against spyware and hijacking,
are you aware of that program and how it functions?

I didn't use AVG for more than a week or so. II always at least try out

things I put on JFWLite, but I don't know if AVG has anything to do with

your problem with exiting OE or not.
Realize that an antivirus program and a firewall are two different
things.
Everyone should have a good antivirus program to protect yourself from
viruses.
As far as a firewall to protect yourself from intrustions, I would just
buy
a router and be done with it, and not necessarily worry about having a
software firewall program, smile.
But if you do use a software firewall, it seems like they all require
some
jaws cursor involvement in the configuration dialogs. I think the main
thing to consider is if the pop up that asks for a program to access the

internet works with Jaws or not. McAfee's does not out of the box.
I really can't give you my opinion on which one is the one you should
choose
based on what is the best firewall protection. I use a router and don't

keep a firewall program installed for very long other than when I'm
checking
it out to help with a question.

Hi I am writing as I am looking for a fire wall program which could work
well with Jaws. I have on my system the Norton internet security suite,
but my subscription is going to run out, and I don't like paying
Symantec on a yearly bases for antivirus etc. If you could tell me how
well the macafee firewall works, and where I could get it along with
your scripts perhaps that might be a good one for me to use.
Also I downloaded and installed the avg virus program from the jfw lite,
and now my Microsoft outlook is having problems when I try to exit it.
I am presented with an error dialog, and when I attempt to investigate
it I am directed to a Microsoft anti crash sight which presents me with
options to upgrade my version. I wonder if you might have any thoughts
on this and I am not sure if the problem is related to the install of
avg.
