Hello Jim and everyone:
to do this you:
1. in your msn go to tools
2. then options
3. and then do a shift tab until you find "tab control personal."
4. Once there go right arrow until you find "general."
5. Once in the general tab do a tab once and you should hear "check box 
checked run messenger when windows starts." you can then uncheck the box 
then hit tab until you find ok and hit enter.
