So, does this mean that you believe the person you replied to is spreading 
eisinformation about the future of Windows in order to turn some of us 
toward considering a Mac or a Linux computer? That's the sense I get from 
the Wikipedia explanation, that it means to spread negative rumors about a 
product in order to turn potential customers off to it and propel them 
toward the product made by the company tha'ts disseminating the FUD.

Or is it now sometimes used more casually, so that there doesn't have to be 
a real or implied motive behind it in that sense if you just want to invoke 
the expression in a more general way, for effect?
