Yeah, Grimster, I was really exercised about this and I felt duty bound not to just ask casually about it but to Google it, look in Wikipedia , and tear apart the Jaws help, both online and off, but I just couldn't find these vital facts! Thank you so much for settling my mind about this issue. Now I can finally relax, even if I'm a little embarrassed that I don't have the facts at my fingertips. Yeesh. Everybody's nuts today. Glad I could provide a little entertainment, you guys. :-) ----- Original Message ----- From: "jim grimsby Jr." <jimgrims@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 2:32 PM Subject: RE: Jaws update feature vs. downloading full update file from FS No In the help file the update is 58 mb In the full install it is 69. So much for being able to find information on your own as you assert in your last message smile. n -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Yardbird Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 12:04 PM To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Jaws update feature vs. downloading full update file from FS Robert, I haven't checked file sizes so I must ask you. Are you saying that what the update method installed for you appeared to be the exact size of the full program? Or is that number showing that it's only a smaller file than the full program? Thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "RAWest" <rawest@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 11:29 AM Subject: RE: Jaws update feature vs. downloading full update file from FS Hello Well just on the last update, I used the update feature and the file size it downloaded was 58 mega bytes So the only thing I know is that using this method gets you out of using the windows installer interface. Other than that I don't know of any other difference. Robert To find me you can do the following. I know how to do this both of the ways I mention in the subject line. However, I have never understood exactly how the two methods differ, aside from the actions you take to do them. Naturally, even though I know how to go to the Jaws Central area of the FS site and find the latest update file, and then run it as an install process myself, I'm attractted to the simplified, easier method of just using the update feature on the Help menu. But there are always discussions on these mailing lists that make it sound as if the two methods are substantively different, and there seem to be ;jurists who believe that using the update feature is a halfway measure that may not properly modify your existing copy of Jaws, and may cause problems. These people seem to believe that the only right and safe way to do an update is to download the latest file from FS, which is a complete replacement for the program, I think, and install it yourself. Could anyone explain the origin of this disagreement, and shed some practical light on the topic? As I said, if I were sure that using the update feature were really responsible and safe, I'd certainly prefer it to having to go to FS, download the huge file and then go through an install wizard procedure. teaksThanks. -- JFW related links: JFW homepage: http://www.freedomscientific.com/ Scripting mailing list: http://lists.the-jdh.com/listinfo.cgi/scriptography-the-jdh.com JFW List instructions: To post a message to the list, send it to jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send a message to jfw-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.
