yeah, I also don't use the autoupdate feature, because I prefer to keep the full installer in case I need to run the repare on jaws. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Warmest Regards, Allan Wong From: jim grimsby Jr. Sent: Saturday, May 24, 2008 05:34 To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: Jaws update feature vs. downloading full update file from FS Sometimes people make changes where the auto update feature might not work. Or as I said they have more then one computer. I myself never use the auto update feature for this reason. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Yardbird Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 12:10 PM To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Jaws update feature vs. downloading full update file from FS Dave, Well, just so it works correctly instead of sabotaging your Jaws, which is how some people make it sound. If the update feature is dependable, why are people still talking about going to the FS site and downloading the latest version when there's an update? Every update, messages fly back and forth. Give me the URL for the download. No, go to FS and get it yourself, just as I'd have to do for you. Does anyone know where I can find the update? And so forth, on and on. Every time. Maybe all these people simply don't know there's an update feature on the interface of the program? If not, how come? Well, never mind. I sort of get that a lot of users just get the program, install it, and fake their way through it by experimenting and asking questions as they go, without studying a tutorial or any instructions. A different approach from mine, I guess. Free country and all that. I guess if I were a blind air traffic controller, I'd quickly see how there's no time to learn a program like Jaws, unless you stopped drinking at night after a hard day's work. Just teasing. No flaming, please. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave 'SqueezeBox' Carlson" <dgcarlson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 11:33 AM Subject: Re: Jaws update feature vs. downloading full update file from FS The file size for the automatic update seems a bit smaller. Also there are no prompts, so you can walk away while it's doing its thing. Dave ----- Original Message ----- From: "Yardbird" <yardbird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: "JFW List" <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 10:39 AM Subject: Jaws update feature vs. downloading full update file from FS As a new update to Jaws 9 has been released, I'm going to install it. I know how to do this both of the ways I mention in the subject line. However, I have never understood exactly how the two methods differ, aside from the actions you take to do them. Naturally, even though I know how to go to the Jaws Central area of the FS site and find the latest update file, and then run it as an install process myself, I'm attractted to the simplified, easier method of just using the update feature on the Help menu. But there are always discussions on these mailing lists that make it sound as if the two methods are substantively different, and there seem to be ;jurists who believe that using the update feature is a halfway measure that may not properly modify your existing copy of Jaws, and may cause problems. These people seem to believe that the only right and safe way to do an update is to download the latest file from FS, which is a complete replacement for the program, I think, and install it yourself. Could anyone explain the origin of this disagreement, and shed some practical light on the topic? As I said, if I were sure that using the update feature were really responsible and safe, I'd certainly prefer it to having to go to FS, download the huge file and then go through an install wizard procedure. teaksThanks. -- JFW related links: JFW homepage: http://www.freedomscientific.com/ Scripting mailing list: http://lists.the-jdh.com/listinfo.cgi/scriptography-the-jdh.com JFW List instructions: To post a message to the list, send it to jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send a message to jfw-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.
