Not saying your upset just saying let it go not that big a deal.

Always good to wonder about things. Only way to learn.

Robert,
I am not in the least distressed, believe me. When I express wonderment
about things like this, I'm not all bent out of shape. I'm offering
discussion about something I find remarkable and puzzling. But I'm not upset
a bit, just to reasure you if my tone hasn't made that clear.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Robert,

Well, if that's what accounts for the smaller file size, and that's
essentially the difference, it makes perfect sense to use the update feature
form the Help menu. I remain puzzled why so many users apparently disregard
this convenience and scurry about every time there's an update discussing
where to find the file and how to download it. Just don't get it. But I
explained that in another recent message.

Thanks again.

Believe it is slightly smaller than the full .exe download.

Remember when you download the file from fs windows installer opens during
install. Using jaws update this part of the installation is bypassed. It
just installs it using your current settings.

So that is how it is treated as an update.

Robert,

I haven't checked file sizes so I must ask you. Are you saying that what the
update method installed for you appeared to be the exact size of the full
program? Or is that number showing that it's only a smaller file than the
full program?
Thanks.

Hello

Well just on the last update, I used the update feature and the file size it
downloaded was 58 mega bytes

So the only thing I know is that using this method gets you out of using the
windows installer interface.

Other than that I don't know of any other difference.

Robert

As a new update to Jaws 9 has been released, I'm going to install it. I know
how to do this both of the ways I mention in the subject line.

However, I have never understood exactly how the two methods differ, aside
from the actions you take to do them. Naturally, even though I know how to
go to the Jaws Central area of the FS site and find the latest update file,
and then run it as an install process myself, I'm attractted to the
simplified, easier method of just using the update feature on the Help menu.

But there are always discussions on these mailing lists that make it sound
as if the two methods are substantively different, and there seem to be
;jurists who believe that using the update feature is a halfway measure that
may not properly modify your existing copy of Jaws, and may cause problems.
These people seem to believe that the only right and safe way to do an
update is to download the latest file from FS, which is a complete
replacement for the program, I think, and install it yourself.

Could anyone explain the origin of this disagreement, and shed some
practical light on the topic? As I said, if I were sure that using the
update feature were really responsible and safe, I'd certainly prefer it to
having to go to FS, download the huge file and then go through an install
wizard procedure.

teaksThanks.
