From your lips to God's ear, as the saying goes. I omitted to mention the miracle of good headphones only because I've lost my hearing in one ear due to a tumor in the inner ear canal, and don't really care to listen to much via headphones or ear buds now other than for audio literature, except when I'm exercising, when I play music I've converted into mono .mp3 files. Having lost the stereo sound stage, I'm not too enthusiastic about using my great AKG phones anymore. Not to be confused with A k forty sevens . Boy, it's a lot of work sometimes to type something so it sounds correct in Jaws so people can recognize a common phrase or word, instead of trying to decipher alphabet soup. Alpha numeric soup. Sort of takes the humor out of a quick, facetious reference like that, which in conversation or visual typing would elicit a good, if cheap laugh at the image of Third World jihadists, armies and paramilitarys going at each other in the deserts, jungles and shell-blasted cities armed with stereo headphones. Oh, well. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)" <Ted.Lisle@xxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, December 22, 2006 5:00 AM Subject: RE: realSpeak Exactly. I'm willing to trade off killer sound for the convenience and comfort of watching a movie in my office on a cold night (it's also the furnace room, I'm only half as dumb as I look). Beside, I have a good headset within easy reach. If I'm feeling picky, I can get back most of what I "lost," just by doing that. I know being a life long fan and musician makes you listen differently, and at our house, the listening could range from Hank Williams, or Flatt and Scruggs, right through Basie or Duke (how about Johnny Hodges?), or even Bird, or Benny Carter. (Yes, I lean toward reed players, although my real weakness is percussion. I always keep track of the drummer, whatever else is going on.) However, once again, I digress. So did the one in my last computer, actually. It seems to me like years ago when I used to hear people worry over which sound card would play a screen reader clearly, and that sort of thing. A bunch of years. If I really were worried about things like signal to noise ratio and frequency range enough to critically test a sound card in those regards, I'd have to have an amp and speakers hooked up to the computer that were as serious as my stereo system, and no, to me, the computer's like a nice, medium-fi table radio. As long as it doesn't distort anything within its speakers' frequency range capabilities, within the range of volume levels possible before hitting an audible distortion point, I'm just fine. as for multiple sources, well, as I said, I don't do that. Thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)" <Ted.Lisle@xxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, December 21, 2006 1:00 PM Subject: RE: realSpeak You probably won't need to worry about it for awhile; from what I know, that's a good one. The products have improved a lot over the years. I guess it would get down to things like s/n ratio and d/a conversion quality. Just a few years ago, it was considered exotic to have multiple streams going at once--like being able to hear JFW, if necessary, while playing a CD. What makes a sound card "better," in the way you mean it? I have a Dell computer of recent vintage, a single sound card (I'm not a big techhie, so I have to launch Belarc Advisor to see what it is), it's a SoundBlaster Live 24-bit. Now, I have Jaws with the standard Eloquence software synth, and that works and sounds fine. Sometimes I stream audio or play an .mp3 file or a music CD, and that sounds fine, too. Given this, what use would I make of a second sound card? Something specialized that I don't know enough to be able to imagine, until you tell me? Thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vicki Wherry" <amethyst17@xxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, December 21, 2006 11:33 AM Subject: Re: realSpeak I have two sound cards because I used an onboard card, and then I added a better sound card later. I use the most recent one, but since I reformatted my computer a few weeks ago, I think certain programs try to use the first card. I need to disable the onboard card in the bios, and hopefully that will fix the problem. Do you have jaws for Windows starting automatically? If you have jaws for Windows starting automatically it is very possible that the RealSpeak voices are coming through the soundcard that was installed last. To see if this is your problem unload Jaws for Windows and restart it. I hope this helps. The text is being read, that is, the curser is moving, but everything is silent. I somehow got it working yesterday, but I'm not sure what I did. Today, again, it's not working. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be? I installed Jill, Lee, Karen and Emily, and none of them are reading.
