To setup your computer so you get a logon box, do the following:
1. Make sure you are logged on with Administrator rights.
2. Go into Control Panel and then User Accounts.
3. Press Tab once and you will hear Change a User Account. Arrow down twice until you hear Change the Way Users login and then press Enter.
4. Uncheck the box next to Use the Welcome Screen.
5. Tab until you hear Apply Changes and press Enter. Then press Alt-F4 to exit the program.
6. While still in the Control Panel, go into the Administrative Tools.
7. From the Administrative Tools, go into Local Security Policy.
8. You will be in a tree view and should be on the Security Settings item. If the Item is closed, press the right arrow key to open it.
9. Arrow down until you hear Local Policies and press the right arrow to open this item.
10. Arrow down until you hear Security Options and then press the Tab key to jump to a list of options.
11. Press the I key to jump to the first Interactive login entry. This should be do not display last user information. You want this to be enabled. If it is disabled, then press Enter to open the option window. Use the arrow keys to highlight the Enabled button and tab to the OK button and press Spacebar.
12. Press the down arrow key once to move to the next Interactive login option. This will be Do Not Require Ctrl+Alt+Del. This option should be Disabled. If it is enabled, press enter to open the option window, use the arrow keys to highlight the Disabled button, Tab to the OK button and press the Spacebar.
13. Press Alt-F4 to exit the program.
14. You can now close the Administrative Tools folder and the Control Panel.

Now, each time you start your computer or Logoff from a user ID, you will be presented with a Windows pre-logon screen. Press the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys all together to bring up the Classic Windows logon screen. You will be in the User Name field and the field will always be blank. Enter your user name and press Tab to move to the password field. Enter your password and press Enter to Logon.

That's it. It sounds more complicated than it is. Also, if you have Jaws set to start with Windows, you will hear it say to press the Ctrl+Alt+Del key combo to continue.

These instructions are for Windows XP with SP2.

John

oooookay, because I have one. I am still the only user on my computer, and I have one. I know that there can be two set-ups on how you want the log-on screen to be. I personally don't know how to set it up, someone else did it for me and it's way more jaws friendly and it presents a username and password box when windows starts up.

There is no username box in XP, Patricia. At least, there isn't on this computer. Now, the situation might be different if you're logging onto a network.

With the welcome screen in XP, you can't type a user name in to the listbox.

yeah, he's pretty bad... lol. did my suggestion not work? shift-tabbing to the username box, entering that and then tabbing to password and entering that? it worked for my student.

I just tried logging off completely and Jaws stopped and wouldn't come on no matter what I did. I tried Narrator and had no luck getting it to read the login screen. It read other things but not that. Maybe I'm not doing something right. One thing is for sure, having heard Sam, one shouldn't complain about Jaws.

Hmm. I'm not sure why that is. It's worked for me. I have several sighted users who use a computer with JAWS.

The short cut is set but it doesn't work to start Jaws when we switch users. I can't get it to run again until I press "control alt J" after I am logged on.

It should, as long as the automatically start jaws checkbox is checked, and the shortcut's target is set properly.

MessageHe turns it off when he gets on or I turn it off when I exit. If he turned it on before he went to switch user, would it run for the login screen?

hi if you start jaws during your user section when you end that user section you also end the running of jaws and any other program you have running. starting jaws automatically runs jaws as a servus and will remain running no mater what user you request unless some user exits jaws. once this happens jaws is no longer running as a servus so when you start jaws again it is a standard user program see above. so a servus is started by the system user and the system user is always on so running jaws as a servus means that you are using it under the system user. where as anything else only applies to the active user. hope that helps.

Is there a setting to keep Jaws on during login? The first time I logged off, (not using switch user) it went off and I had to manually turn it back on when I was logged on. Apparently, is automatically turns off when someone logs off.
