I don't use Vista at the moment, but the one feature that I loved was being able to independently change the volume level of specific applications.

And there are real reason to prefer Vista over XP, and I'm one of the
ones who at first wasn't thrilled about the switch.

For instance, here are the things which I enjoy about Vista:

* improved security against viruses and malware.  You only have to be
wiped out once to appreciate this.

* much much easier facilities for searching for files or programs, and
starting them.  For instance, it's quite common to remember you've got a
program named say "mp3 fixer" on your pc, but you don't remember the
company who produced it, and all the menu groups under xp are usually
named for the company, so you've got to go through each one, looking in
the menu choices, until you finally find "mp3 fixer".

Under vista, at the start menu, when you first bring up the start menu,
you only need to start typing in some keywords from what you remember of
the title, such as "mp3 fixer"; it will very quickly find the program
menu choice, and bring it up as a menu item for you to pick.  It does
the same thing with files on your system, making it very easy to find a
file, especially one you've just downloaded, but don't know where it
went.

* speech recognition.  Not only is this just cool, and it can save you a
lot of typing, and it can make things happen much faster once you learn
to use it.  Now, on my pc, I can say something like "tivo house", and
the speech recognition causes the tivo scheduling web site to open, and
automatically it has searched for shows with "house" as their name for
me.

* you get some nice accessory packages, such as windows calendar, that
you used to have to go buy outlook to get.

* it has better facilities for streaming audio/video content, and acting
as a home media server.

And that's just what I can remember at the moment.  Definitely don't
worry about buying vista, and be sure to buy premium instead of basic;
the cost difference is minimal, and you get a lot for your money.  You
can always upgrade vista online at any time, unlike xp, so you don't
have to reinstall it in case you want the ultimate edition say.

Hi,

I understand that it would be better to get home premium than
vista basic.
You would get a lot more out of vista home premium.

There are those who might disagree, and that is ok.

Also regarding Windows XP, they are going to be doing away
with it int he
future, so it might be better to get Vista, because I
understand that even
though Microsoft has extended keeping XP out there for
awhile, there won't
be any mroe updates. Security seems to be a pretty big issue
right now.
