it sounds like a dialog is covering the desktop use widowskey m to minimize all 
applications. if that doesn't work, try windows key + d.

  Apologies if this topic has already been covered, but one of my friends is 
having trouble with Jaws 8.2 on his computer.
  Whenever he goes to the desktop, his arrow keys stop working. Also, he can't 
use single character navigation (pressing 'i' to jump to Internet Explorer, and 
so on).
  Does anyone know what the problem might be?
  I've never heard of this before, so the only thing that comes to mind is 
uninstalling Jaws and then re-installing it.
