JFW and the Internet

Does anyone have a good explanation as to what Jaws does to a web page
when reading it? We are working on a new web site and neither the
designer or I know very much about designing accessible web sites. We
are going to check the W3 site for info. I would like to know what Jaws
does when reading a web site. For example does Jaws turn navigation
bars into something else like a list? What happens to the information
as we scroll down the web page?
