Ted,
The price was in the "low '20's?" What do you mean?

It's a Hewlett-Packard I purchased at Sam's Club, back on the 22nd of
January, 2006. I can't remember the exact price, but I have a couple of
receipts. I know it was in the low '20's, including the price of an
extra year's warranty. It came with 2 DVD drives, one a writer, a card
reader, and a nice hard drive. Of course, as you have gathered, it runs
XP Media Center, a fact I have only recently begun to appreciate. I
needed a professional license anyway, because our office has run either
XP Pro or Win 2000 for several years now, and I saw no sense of
continuing to maintain two separate licenses.

With help from a sighted neighbor, who happens to do IT, and Narrator, I
had JAWS in the first day. With JAWS, Juno, and my Bible in place that
afternoon, I could then take my time with the rest of the tweaking.
Being frugal, I simply reinstalled my Office 2000 Pro, and it seems to
work just fine.

Hello back Ted

Thanks for getting back to me so soon. You have quite a power
house computer there, it sounds like. If you don't mind, what was the
price of this speed demon with 2 dig of ram and what brand name is it?
and also, is this a laptop? Thanks in advance if you don't mind telling
me the brand name, and the price of this power house computer you have
and whether it is a laptop or not.

Happy surfing

Hank

Hank, as I recall, it runs at 3.2, with about 2GB. The
times the configuration really pays off involve certain multitasking
situations. For instance, we've all seen how antivirus programs (Norton
comes to mind) can really slow down other activities. I recall one of
our network guys used to try to schedule virus checks during lunch
breaks. I've seen Norton and AVG run on this thing without blinking.
Of course, this helps speech, along with everything else.

You will also notice a difference in installation
routines. Processes which used to take minutes now take seconds.

However, in closing, I must add that I came from a
400MHz platform with (I think) 128MB--a red hot platform in the summer
of 1998, so anything I upgraded to would have looked like a speed demon
by comparison.

Hello Ted

With this dual core processor computer, do you
find that jaws runs alot quicker or for that matter that all the things
on your new computer run alot quicker or get done alot faster, compared
to your single processor computer? and just curious, what speed is your
computer, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 or higher? and how much ram do you have? If you
can get back to me, would really appreciate it. Thanks.

I don't know about JAWS having a
processor all to itself, but those dual-core processors are slick. the
main advantage, as you implied, appears to be performing cycle-intensive
tasks, such as virus checking, without crippling your system. I've used
one for just a few days shy of a year, and couldn't be happier.

Has anybody tried running JAWS 8 with
RealSpeak voices running, on a computer with a Duel Core processor. For
those who don't understand what they are, they are just the new type of
processor, which have two processors in one, meaning your computer wont
slow down when doing background tasks such as virus checking.

I fured this might make a big
improvements to us JAWS users as we are always running JAWS which is
quite intensive, on top of the application we are actualy trying to
access.

Would it mean JAWS would almost have a
processor all to itself while you are running other stuff you are
accessing.

Peter
