JAWS reading phone numbers; was: New JAWS Update Now Released

Hi Mike,

Yes, I do definitely have number processing controlled by synthesizer.

This issue has been discussed here before. However, for the benefit of those who may be relatively new to this list, I will explain the situation.

In all earlier versions of JAWS, right up till the third build of JAWS 9, telephone numbers were read as follows with number processing controlled by synthesizer:

For example, the phone number 416-702-5098 was read as:

four one six seven o two five o nine eight

However, that same phone number is now read as follows:

four hundred sixteen seven hundred two fifty ninety eight

Several of us contacted FS about this. Finally, someone there admitted that they did change the way phone numbers are read and, in fact, that person, who is also a JAWS user herself, said she was also trying to get them to change it back to the way it used to be or, at least, give us the option to have it whichever way we as individual users want it.

I hope this explains the situation better.

   Thanks,

   Don

Hi Don,

In your configuration manager, on the text processing page, in the number
processing selection, do you have controlled by synthesizer selected? This is what I have selected and Jaws 10 reads telephone numbers just fine. Hope
this helps, take care.

Mike

Hi all,

I checked out 2 problems we have been having for some time and am happy
to report that one of them seems to be fixed in this new build of JAWS 10.0.

Ever since Windows Media Player 11 has been on our systems, once WMP 11
was launched, the Copy and Cut commands would no longer be reported by JAWS until JAWS was unloaded and reloaded. I just tried it and those commands are
now reported, even after launching WMP 11. Thank you, FS!

However, I still see that phone numbers are being read improperly by
JAWS, which is something that has been happening since the third build of
JAWS 9.0, even though telephone numbers were read properly in all earlier
versions of JAWS, including the first two builds of JAWS 9.0.

So, I guess that's good news and bad news!

   Don

Hi

If you have not updated to the latest build, but are using jfw 10, then
yes it will work fine.

answer to that one, as I am already updated. But if you try the
automatic update and it works, then the answer is yes, you can get it
that way, but if you can't get it that way, absolutely no harm will
have
been done, except that you wasted somewhere between twenty and forty
seconds of your life. <GRIN> Again, that was not meant to be a
wisecracking answer, I honestly don't know if the auto-update will work
for this release. I would suggest, though, regardless, that the
information on what is new and what is fixed in this update should be
required reading for anyone wishing to update: at least skim through it
to see what is relevant to you.
