Thanks all!
I was OK taking notes. I had my iPhone and my Apple keyboard. I could not,
however, edit a 40 page MS Word software license agreement full of automatic
numbering, automatic cross-references, multiple outline-level styles, tables,
bookmarks, and track changes. So, the iPhone was out, and NVDA didn't really
cut it either. Fortunately, I only needed to mark, delete, and copy a few
paragraphs and edit a few sentences. So, I got by with NVDA.
I'm on the Freedom Scientific site right now. I went through the price sheet
and saw nothing about a thumb drive or portable JAWS, though I did see
references in the technical support archives to both. I'm sending Freedom
Scientific a message right now to inquire.
I thought dongles were hardware devices to prevent unlawful use. That is, the
software won't work unless it gets in touch with a dongle which is plugged into
the computer. That would mean, I suppose, I would have to carry the dongle (no
problem) and download to install. That works if I have an Internet connection.
I suppose I could just keep the JAWS CD in my laptop bag.
Still, I think the thumb drive option may be the best, provided Freedom
Scientific still offers it.
I'll find out.

Yes, a dongle as well as PDAs work for taking notes if all else fails.
