Joan, There is a program called "Text pal" that is used to convert PDF files.  
I don't have the link anymore but perhaps someone else on this list has it.

  Could someone suggest a free (or inexpensive) program that will work with 
JAWS and Windows XP to convert PDF image files to text?  I frequently get  PDF 
file attachments that are fax messages that have been converted to PDF and
