what you said and it worked. How accurate is it? Do I still need an OCR
software if I'm just reading library books?

When you tried the Office 2003 image did you do this:
File menu, select a new scan.
Then the scan button.
THEN you have to go the tools menu, enter on send text to word.
The next dialog will have the radio button selected for all page, enter on
okay.
Then in a second, it should bring up the scanned text in word.
Did you send it to word? I was lost until I found that in the menu too, I
thought what good is an ocr that just gives me a tff image, grin?

I think I'm doing something wrong. I've never used a scanner before, so I'm
confused. When I scan a page with the scanner it opens in acrobat reader and
someone told me that the docubent is visible but Jaws says alert empty page.
So that makes me think I need OCR software. So I tried the office 2003 and
jaws did not read the document but I thought it was because the document
saved as a Tift image. So what am I doing wrong and do I still need OCR
software so Jaws can read it?

Has anybody just tried the micsoft office document imaging that comes with
office 2003? I think it might have came with office XP also. It looks
pretty jaws friendly, but I don't know how accurate it is.
I don't have a scanner hooked up right now, but now I'm curious, so I'm
going to get my husband to hook one up. Also, if you are a office xp or
2003 user, you can upgrade to omnipage 15 for $149.99 and save $350 off
our
regular, full product price.. I have used omnipage in the past and liked
the way it integrated with microsoft word.

The person at Freedom Scientific who told you that you could only use
Omnipage or OpenBook with JFW 7.0 was dead wrong!
As I wrote in my previous message, I am using Abbyy Fine Reader Pro with
JFW
7.0, with no problem, and I am certain that there are many members of this
list who are using other OCR programs with JFW 7.0 with no problem.
As for your question about the most inexpensive OCR software, this depends
on your expectations of how well you expect the OCR software to perform.
Rememver: you get what you pay for. There are freeware OCR programs
available, but they may not be as accurate in converting scanned text, and
they may not be as user-friendly as OCR programs you have to pay for. $150
is not too much for an OCR program; some OCR programs sell for as much as
$1000.
If you can find a good OCR program for less than $150, and it supports
your
model of scanner, I say go for it.

get
an
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) program, such as Abbyy Fine Reader,
OpenBook, Kurzweil 1000, etc.
I have an Epson scanner (a different model from yours) and I use Abbyy
Fine
Reader Pro to scan books. It is fast and quite accurate, and works just
fine
with JAWS 7.0.
Just make sure that whatever OCR software you are thinking about getting
has
support for your model of scanner. An email or phone call to the company
is
recommended.
