Tom, I assume you're talking about getting automatic numbered or bulleted lists when you don't want them. This annoying feature is on by default in Word. Where you find and turn it off varies slightly among different Word versions. In Word xp (2002,) go to the tools menu, then Autocorrect options (alt+t, a.) Then control+tab into the Autoformat as you type tab and arrow down through the list, unchecking the items you don't want Word automatically doing for you. Similarly, in the somewhat unlikely event you use the Autoformat option on the format menu, go to the Autoformat tab and tab through it, choosing those items you want handled when you choose to Autoformat.
