Tom, I assume you're talking about getting automatic numbered or bulleted 
lists when you don't want them.  This annoying feature is on by default in 
Word.  Where you find and turn it off varies slightly among different Word 
versions.  In Word xp (2002,) go to the tools menu, then Autocorrect 
options (alt+t, a.)  Then control+tab into the Autoformat as you type tab 
and arrow down through the list, unchecking the items you don't want Word 
automatically doing for you.  Similarly, in the somewhat unlikely event you 
use the Autoformat option on the format menu, go to the Autoformat tab and 
tab through it, choosing those items you want handled when you choose to 
Autoformat.
