I need help with JAWS and Word

Howdy!
Here's the deal.  I have the latest version of Word 2003.  I also have the 
latest version of JAWS 5.00.844.  
I am having a very hard time navigating in MS Word.  It keeps telling me that 
letters are actually spaces or blanks when they're really not.
It is truly making it hard to be editing documents and such.  I refresh the 
screen and unload and reload JAWS.
Does anyone have some tips or tricks?  I'm sure people have encountered this 
before, right?
