Re: Hotmail Account & Jaws

Hi Jeff;

In order to view Hotmail messages from within Outlook and Outlook Express,
you need to have Hotmail Plus or MSN Premium, both of which cost money.
Microsoft introduced this restriction last September
(http://www.internetweek.com/breakingNews/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=479031
73) in an attempt to reduce spam, as spammers were using this feature in
conjuntion with scripts, to send mass mail through a hotmail account very
quickly.

If all you want to do is to use MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger, you do
*not* need a Hotmail or MSN account. Your identity for Messenger is
determined by something called a .Net Passport. Both Hotmail and MSN
Accounts get a .Net Passport when you create them, but anyone, even if they
don't have an MSN or Hotmail account, can get one. There's a simple .Net
Passport sign-up, although it has a graphical word verification test, to
enable someone to get a .Net Passport. The sign-up is at:
http://www.passport.com

A .Net passport is a useful beast. A lot of companies are using this as the
user name/password to sign into personalised web sites. Microsoft, such as
http://www.microsoft.com/careers, use it to identify a user, as do some
other web sites. So, it's a useful thing to have.
