His suggestion would only stop JAWS from pronouncing greater-than
signs in emails, not in all other applications. I couldn't tell if
you knew that already; sorry if I'm stating the obvious.

adjustment to Jaws, for me. Some day I'll come upon that little program for
stripping out the marks from an annoying email, and I'll share the URL.

If I'm not mistaken, the suggestion is to treat the greater than sign > as a
word in the JAWS dictionary and then to type a single space in the
replacement field. I expected JAWS to say "space," but it didn't verbalize
anything.
I added the caveat that I have JAWS set to "some" punctuation, which may
have skewed my results.
