Thank you, Moses.  Removing the address book from the screen seems to 
have cured the garbling problem.

Hi Graham,

Yes, you can try maximize that window manually or by "autosizer" 
program
from jfwlite website.
You can also try uncheck the contacts checkbox in layout under view in 
your
outlook express but then you will not see your address book but you 
can
change it, when you need.
