Thanks Cher

I'll try that.

Can scripting overcome JAWS inability to read text in a protected Word form?

You put anything you want JAWS to read either in the status line or (if
there are a lot of instructions or extra information) you can also add text
in what is called the "help text" field. This is pretty neat because when
you tab to that field, JAWS says "for help press F1". So the user just does
that and the additional information is read. I'm thinking that in your
older version of JAWS you might not automatically hear that message and may
have to add the prompt to press F1 at the end of your status line text.

Hi Cher

. Ouch, does that mean that Jaws cannot possibly read any text not
associated with a form field of a protected page form. What if there are
section headings and instructions for filling in the form?

P.S. The headings are not going to read on a protected form. All you will
hear is the text which JAWS thinks is associated with the form field.

Thanks Cher

Yeah I'm trying to edit a form and make sure it reads correctly in JAWS 5.1
once it is set to protected mode.

In JAWS 5.1 the Headings on a Protected form don't seem to read and it seems
like the only things I can read on a page are the lines with a field in
them. Even in "Say All" mode it does read text on the page that is not
associated with a form field.

Christopher says this has been solved in version 7. Is there a workaround
in 5.1?

Not sure why you would want to work with the unprotected file unless you're
editing it. The form will work as intended if it is protected. As you tab,
the field prompts should be read, if the form is properly constructed. If
you tab in an unprotected form, you'll add a tab stop to the text.

I'm struggling with reading forms in Microsoft Word.

I have a few questions.

1. In JFW 5.1 does anybody else have issues with inconsistent behavior.
Sometimes it reads OK sometimes it doesn't?
2. Is there a way to read headings and list them in MS Word using JAWS 5.1?
3. In the Help files for keystrokes there are only three commands listed for
navigating Forms (list forms, Move focus to first form field, and read form
contents)

I'd appreciate any tips tricks for reading forms both in protected and
unprotected mode. Thanks a lot.
