Rosemarie,

Why are you recommending a laptop over a desktop computer? Each type has
its advantages and its disadvantages, but neither type is any more likely
than the other to be good or not good with Jaws, as a class. All that
matters is whether certain components (such as the video drivers) are
appropriate, which isn't really that hard to ensure, and then that the
operating system is one that will work with the version of Jaws you have or
that you intend to use. And after reading all the messages on this thread,
about so much trouble resulting from getting a computer with an unexpected
operating system, it seems pretty clear that the informed Jaws user-- and,
as I think Adrian mention, a Jaws user is obligated to be at least a little
more knowledgeable about his or her computer than most sighted users have to
be-- makes sure that they're sold a computer with the proper operating
system. All you have to do is ask, and now that we know about this problem
with the Media Edition, just to make sure that the seller knows exactly what
operating system has been loaded onto that machine. If they don't know, and
can't read the information to the buyer from a file or an invoice, then
they're not someone to buy from, but just a sales clerk.

Again, laptop or desktop, either is fine. And the ordinary Jaws user
doesn't need a custom made computer. It's really not rocket science, as
they say.

Hi, Katrina. I agree with Alan. Itwould be better to get a laptop computer
with either xp home or xp pro. I had a similar problem but it wasn't with
media center. In May of this year I got a new desktop computer that my
nephew had built for me. When he got the kit, he didn't know it had xp pro
on it. We had installed my jaws 4.51 and it ran as a demo instead of the
real version. I had to spend money to get xp home and now it works fine. I
just installed my upgrade version of jaws which is 5.0. My parents had
helped me get jaws 4.51 and it came with the free upgrade of 5.0.
