I use a laptop and to avoid this problem, do not allow the laptop to go into 
standby or hibernation mode.  I think that consensus still is to not enable 
standby or hibernation, but some other laptop users can chim in here on 
this.
I think that a way you can lower your battery consumption is to under power 
settings in control panel, use "maximize battery" but go in and do not check 
items having to do with standby or hibernation or by setting the control for 
these modes to never.
I also have the ability on my sony PCG V505EC laptop, the ability to make my 
display dimly lit to save on power.  drives sighted folks crazy who are 
trying to read the screen from afar.
