Hi,

I am not as good with my JAWS and all of its many features as I would like to be. I have had JAWS since like maybe version 3.5, and yet am still just a lazy sot who just gets it and does not read all the different things and how to best use it.

That being said, sometimes since joining this list, I have read of many things from your collective wisdom, so thank you.

As to this locking code number, here is what I recently experienced with it.
I have JAWS on 2 desktops and one lapttop, all current.
Then, for whatever reason, I recently purchased one of these very tiny and cool Acer Netbook units. These do not even have a disc drive.

So being a rather techno user always behind the curve, I asked, well how will I install JAWS? Or other things.

I was able to get it done, however. I downloaded the program from the Freedom Scientific website. Okay. Then it came to the point during the process when JAWS asked for the locking code. Oh, dear, I thought, I was in for a trouble.

Then it came to me about the locking code likely being on the program cd update that had arrived in the mail, and indeed there they were there. And all was well. But I would wonder, had I not had been able to dig up that disc, what other method to use, or is calling Freedom Scientific probably the best way. I am sure not one to go hacking into my system. That is usually just trouble for me.

If anyone has any other tips about using these little pc's without a disc drive, I'm all ears, thanks to JAWS, and your good discussions.

I also would ask, it seems very often there are a number of the pop up dialog boxes where JAWS does not read any of the text, rather just the buttons and links you can TAB around on. Ideas? I am using the latest version of JAWS, 10 xxx 154 on an xp pro OS on all my units.

Rik

Sue B.,

Only point to bring up is that when you are in the process of authorizing an
upgrade, the 20-digit CD key is indeed displayed on the computer screen,
already populating the input field.

Is it possible that it is in the registry, but encrypted so it can't be
found by a string search?

Dave

Hi all,

This discussion is really getting redundant. I'm going to try my hand at
an explanation. Every copy of JAWS sold has a Serial Number. That is the
number you find on the JAWS packaging as well as on the About JAWS
dialog box. This number is not your 20 digit authorization code. The
serial number is connected to the Authorization Code so that your
software can be legally activated a given number of times. The 20 digit
Authorization Code appears in one and only one place, on the
Authorization CD that came with your copy of JAWS. This is done as part
of the copy protection of JAWS to prevent pirating of the software. Only
the person who has possession of the Authorization Code on that CD can
activate the copy of JAWS that is tied to that 20 digit code. The
verification of this is done through the Internet or over the phone if
you don't have Internet access when you are going through the
authorization process. There is no place, and I do mean no place, that
this 20 digit code appears on the computer once the authorization
process is completed. This makes sense from the point of view of
protecting software from getting used by anyone at any time (software
piracy). When this discussion began on this list I took my 20 digit code
and searched for that string of characters in my Windows Registry (this
is a bit of a hacker mentality and not meant to encourage those
unfamiliar with it to play in their Windows Registry). I was not
surprised to find that it was not there since the verification of that
20 digit code takes place online and not through anything in the Windows
Registry. It is true that there are software programs that will reveal
the product keys to other software that is supposed to be protected from
multiple illegal copies of it getting passed around, but these just
serve to basically brake the software protection and allow for illegal
copies to float through cyberspace. Those programs were written by
people who want to find product keys so that they can illegally install
copies of software that they do not want to pay for. I'm not in any way
defending or criticizing the copy protection of JAWS, or any other
software, with the information here (although I do have opinions on this
that I'll keep to myself). I am just trying to explain how the 20 digit
code is part of the JAWS copy protection scheme that is used by Freedom
Scientific to assure that those who have not paid for JAWS do not have
easy access to it.

If anyone finds anything I've said here inaccurate or has farther
explanation, please let us all know.

Hi Chris,

It's wuite strange. I just received my authorization to upgrade from
jaws 7.0 to 10.0. Therefore, I installer jaws 10 and at end, I launched
the activation process.

The 10-characters activation code was already displayed, so I only add
to press <enter> and jaws was activated successfully after awhile.

But now, when I recall the "About..." box, it displays my serial number
but I don't see this 10-characters code which was necessary to activate
my copy and which is printed on the back of my jaws disk sleeve.

Have a nice day. ChD

the authorisation key should be in the 'about' in jaws main window.
