Hi,
Jfw 11 seems to have video issues and activation. I went through a
similar episode with vista and jfw11. I installed the OS, then jfw,
authorized not realizing i don't keep track of these things, that i
used my last activation. Well, ran a windows update and one of the
things it wanted to update was the video driver. I've been down this
road before just rerun jfw video intercept and all will be well. Well,
it was not, the driver hooked in, but jfw was in demo mode. As this
happened on a friday night my choice was either jfw in 40 minute demo
mode until monday or learn NVDA and it's Espeak synth. Monday morning
i got this issue resolved.
As for the what to do, and this is just a personal opinion, I've never
been a fan of product activation the successor to the jfw
authorization disk, two different versions of that. I think that
screen readers prices in particular and assistive technology in
general, are to high for persons who are not on their State's
assistance whatever that may be to afford. I state this not only for
those on SSI/SSDI but those individuals trying to raise a family. For
me the solution has been not to upgrade, cost versus benefits i don't
feel i should pay for versions that are only bug fixes to previous
versions and bugs for that matter in software i'm not using. I was
using jfw5 until about a year ago when my copy was destroyed and i was
left screen readerless. The fix then back to the state, they bought me
the first one, the one that was illegally seized and tossed, they
bouthg me jfw9 and after prodding an SMA. I'm authorized through 11
then on my own again. As for the future what i'm going to do after 11
I can not say. Fs's activation policy is only one such that i disagree
with, their Braille driver even though i don't own a display is
another, prices and anticompetitive practices their fight with one of
their competitors.
My best advice for whatever it's worth is to take each user and each
situation as it comes. There are alternatives to jfw, jfw is the most
prevelent again in my opinion because that's what many state rehab
agencies train and recommend. Some of the alternatives are lesser in
price, some are free such as NVDA and others. For the free versions
you will loose the ability to call up a company to report a bug or get
help, but that might be better for some.
I didn't mean to ramble, i hope this has been helpful in some way.
Dave.
