FINDING A TASK IN THE BACKGROUND

mY HARD DRIVE SUDDENLY STARTED WORKING HARD.
I checked the systray and task list and alt-tabbed around pressing insert t to
try to get at what was running, but, none of these options helped.
Is there another way to get at what is going on?
