I don't know why some do, but if you have used something like an Opticon to
read things like books or news papers it becomes obvious that the spacing
following a sentence is not a double space. It is somewhat larger because the
period takes up little space. Remember too that I am speaking from the
aesthetic perspective of the graphics designers and those who are creating text
to appear the most attractive. This is not necessarily the same requirement for
those accepting manuscripts.
I to was raised and learned to type in the days when double spacing was
imperative. Manual typewriters which pounded the by geapers out of you. Back
before the days of carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a very natural thing to learn
and a very difficult thing to unlearn when you don't want it.
