Hello John: I have been a computer user since the mid 1970's. I have built computers at various times over the years. I do not attempt using a piece of software until I have read and understood the basics of the program at least. The 2 TB drive to which I am going to restore the image has not been partitioned or formatted. Apparently symantec discontinued it and it is shareware now on soft32.com. The last partition magic I had was a paid for copy so I assume that the control is different. Also, I was using jaws 10 and 11 so I am sure jaws 8 might behave differently. I've worked in data recovery for years before I went blind and I know of all the pitfalls that one can encounter with this kind of powerful software. Not to poke fun, but doing this blind without some knowledge is dangerous unless you are educated about partitions. I would suggest he keeps any images or backup readily available. I would rather copy the data over to a 100 percent allocated partition that is already formatted. I have seen Raid devices that didn't like resized partition drives when you go to duplicate them. He was using two terabyte drives and I am not sure if he is going to mirror with it, but I would caution against this. It really depends on your hardware. Promise makes a nice network storage stand alone but it is not friendly when it comes to using jaws with the beginning setup software. The web interface is quite accessible though. My main point is, be cautious and don't leap before you know what you are doing. ----- Original Message ----- From: Farfar Carlson To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, March 04, 2011 3:56 PM Subject: Re: Disk partitioning software that is accessible using JAWS John, Yes I changed my partition a few times before I settled on the optimum distribution. It was all accessible with JAWS -- and in those days JAWS 8.0. It didn't work for the more complicated of tasks. I can see partitioning a brand new drive with 100 percent allocation, but to resize a partition is another story. Perhaps they came out with a different version of 8.0. Can you resize partitions? I would use the updated version given that it might be more accessible. I naturally gave up playing with it after the first attempt. What I discovered is that it is mostly graphical information, plus I didn't want to confuse other hard drives and accidentally select the wrong one. When did you download this software? Is it compatible with windows 7? ----- Original Message ----- From: Mike & Barbara In Arcadia To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, March 04, 2011 11:41 AM Subject: Re: Disk partitioning software that is accessible using JAWS Hi Dave; I have also used Partition Magic 8.0 to partition the HardDrives of 3 computers, with no problems. If you would like to take a look at the manual for PM 8.0, I will send it to you off list. Take care. I used an disk image program called Image for Windows, which is very accessible using JAWS, to create an image of my existing aging 160 GB IDE drive. I intend to use Image for Windows, to restore the disk image to one of the 2 TB drives. However, when I have done that, there will be an unallocated partition containing the remaining available free space for that drive. What disk partitioning software can I use, that is accessible using JAWS, to resize the newly created partition and create, allocate and format the remaining extended partition for that drive? Thanks in anticipation.
