Here's an answer to someone complaining that their notebook cursor was
"jumping around". Could this apply to your losing focus issue?

"I have the same problem with certain laptops, and it's generally caused
by mistakenly hitting the touchpad, which is located right under the
space bar. If I inadvertently rest the back end of my thumb on the
touchpad while typing, the cursor will jump to a place in the document
where the computer thinks I'm moving it with the touchpad. If it seems
to happen mostly right after you hit the spacebar, this is probably
what's happening. Sometimes it also happens because the touchpad is
dirty. There are three ways you may be able to fix the problem: change
the position of your hands on the keyboard (lifting them up so that part
of your thumb doesn't come to rest on the touchpad), clean the touchpad
with a slightly damp cloth, and/or use the touchpad software to set it
not to accept "tapping."
