Dealing with SPAM?

Hi all!
may be this is off topic for this lists. But, I want some advise from
other people. I registered in this list for about 4 months already.
Since I subscribe in this list, I always received an e-mail telling that
I won such a big price. But, once I answered that I'm interested they
telling me to contact those persons that I do not know where came from.
I don't know if this is a SPAM. My friend told me that this is a SPAM.
But, I don't know what is Spam's mean? Does anybody explain to me what
is a S P A M? What is the best way for me not to received those
e-mails? Please send me an advise.
Does anybody experience like this?
