Laura,

JAWS can speak that information if you use the INS+TAB combination,
you have to enable the Item Number check-box for your verbosity level
however:

1) INS+F2 and select Configuration Manager

2) Depending on your needs either alter your program's jcf or hit
CTRL+SHIFT+D for the default configuration

3) On the Settings menu choose Verbosity

4) Look at the radio buttons and make sure you like the current level.

5) TAB down to the command button that corresponds to your chosen
verbosity level and activate it with SPACE.

6) Arrow down the list and check the Item Number box

7) TAB to the Ok button and activate.

8) TAB to the Ok button here as well and activate.

9) Save your config file and close Configuration Manager

10) Your lists should now speak the item number when they are first
given focus and whenever you hit INS+TAB and possibly other commands.
