Hi Roy, Marsha and all, Jack is almost right when he mentioned something about processor priority and the task at hand. True, some applications seem very busy, others want priority no matter what. Hey, we're supposed to be in a multi-tasking environment with free input. Okay, let's have another look at the web page download situation from a programmer's point of view: We have three main players: the Operating System, Internet Explorer, and Jaws 6. Normally, Windows acts as a referee or a moderator, sometimes. You can call the Windows Task Manager using Alt Control Delete whenever you want to end a responding or non-responding task, but it doesn't always work. Internet Explorer alone will let you use the Escape key to cancel a page download if you change your mind, and if there's no hacker capturing your computer. This is very important because the Escape key has to be accessible in any situation. Normally, this Escape key alone should stop any speech output. Jaws has a complex task: it has to monitor the user input (keyboard and mouse) as well as Windows and application processes all the time, not matter what. Not always easy! Applications have to act in a civilized manner, that is to say, do your thing as much as you want, but let others do their own business via the Operating System, whenever they want, if and when required. Not an easy task! Normally, programmers will design a process such as reading or printing, or whatever, but it's better to keep the communication open so that other applications can listen to user keystrokes for their own business. That's not always the case. You can have a hit and run situation, an application forcing you to react through some dialog boxes, or worst, an application will hijack and freeze any user keystroke in the system in order to do its own thing. To summarize, the Escape key provided by the Windows Multitasking System should stop any web page download at will, and the Jaws assigned Control key should stop any speech output whenever pressed. If nothing works at all, then we have a synchronization or a design problem. Enough is enough, but it still goes on.
