How does one highlight multiple lines when the lines are not one below =
the other but all over the document?

One thing you can do is to write the document. When you are finished
highlight the lines you want to center and then press ctrl+e.

Subject: Centering Text in Word
I have problems centering text in Word. That is, I know that if I hit
"control E", the text will be centered, but it doesn't give a verbal =
prompt
like the "bold" command (control B) does, so I never know when its =
turned
off. I've ended up centering entire documents without knowing.
Typically, I just want to center the top line or two, in a document.
Would appreciate any tips on this,
Danney
