ah, yes. I remember, now. What this "relaxing" is, is a special exemption
when the copyrighted material is intended for the use of blind or otherwise
disabled readers. It's the same exemption that allows the National Library
Service to produce audio recordings for the blind and physically disabled as
they do.

thanks for reminding me. But then, I guess it's all done on trust, yes?
Interesting.

Yardbird

It has something to do with changing of a law regarding relaxing of
copyright regulations in America, but this "relaxing" is not applicable in
other countries.

So, when one lives outside of the USA (Australia, South Africa, Europe) you
cannot become a member because copyright on the books still hold in these
countries - something along these lines.

Does anyone know the reason for this restriction of American citizenship?
Given the borderless nature of the Internet and Web-based services such as
Bookshare, it would seem natural for there to be unfettered access, so long
as all users paid the required fees and abided by whatever restrictions the
organization mandates. I am just asking. don't have a dog in this fight, if
indeed it's any kind of fight in the first place. But just wondering. And
does the restriction mean that even a person living as a legal resident here
in the continental U.S., Alaska or Hawaii can't join Bookshare? Do you have
to snail mail photocopies of your citizenship papers when you get them, or a
birth certificate if you're native born?

Again, not trying to argue about it. Just very curious.

Hi All

I am not an American citizen and therefore am not allowed to join
bookshare.org as a member.

Although I can download very old books for free from bookshare.org, most of
these books are available in Braille or on tape anyway.

There however is another website where I for example can download books that
members have scanned in for personal use and put on this "unknown" website.

From my side I can "deposit" books that I have scanned in for myself, to the
website .

This has the advantage of saving ten people from scanning in the same book
and makes it possible for more people to "read" more or have access to more
books.

Hope there is somebody who can help.
