Good suggestion, Nortstart. When I lost all speech on my computer a few
weeks back, it turned out to be that USB ports got switched around (without
my permission) and my USB serial went silent.
I only needed to unplug and re-connect a couple of my USB devices to get the
hardware to start working again and speech came back.
Really irritating.

hmmm, if you have access to a pair of usb
headphones, try pluging them in and see if jaws
comes talking on them. then you can check your sound card settings.
