I am using jaws 6.2, and didn't have an eloquence folder under the shared folder. So, to be on the safe side I created one and put the file in it. If I notice anything different about the way jaws act because of this I'll let the group know.

By the way, this is indeed a problem. To test it out before I installed the patch, I opened the .dct file in my favorite editor, textpad, and read through the file. At some point, jaws quit reading and I got the ding from the computer telling me something had aborted--I assume it was jaws.

Actually, though I'm not condoning this person's actions sending out e-mails with the offending words in it, but, I guess the blind have come of age in the internet world--we have our very own virus (sort of), and, as is true of all viruses, does nothing but show the juvenile self-centered thinking of the sender. But, for we the blind, this may be a milestone--we've received a virus dedicated to us--Norton, avg, and any other virus scaner doesn't know about it, but cooperation between the users and the vendor prevented it from becoming a real problem. Now, if they could... oh well, that's for another day.

Thanks,
Bob

Well, I still say you're a major power user. That's the glass half full way
to say "I'm behind on these things and so I have all these programs
installed." Anyway, I'll assume that my putting the file into just one
place will be sufficient. Truth is, you don't ordinarily run into either of
those goofy "words," anyway, except that there are pranksters who are
sending out emails to some of us with these things in the emails, just to
make trouble. But that's something for a psychological study to find why
someone would do this to other blind people. The reality is, these things
aren't such a threat because they hardly ever appear anywhere.

Carry on. Hope you're feeling reasonably well, and holding up. Thanks for
the good cheer and the helpful messages.
Daniel

I have the shared folder under C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Shared\Eloquence\6.1 I have 6.0, 7.0, and 7.1 installed. My thinking would be that there isn't an eloquence 7 or 7.1 folder because they are using a different technique. But I don't know, remember I was gone for a long time and when I left I think I was at 6.10. I have only been back on the computer for about a motnh so I have a lot of catching up to do myself! Hi Debbie,
Thanks very much for directions to the page about the patch. I downloaded
and extracted it, and I have only one more question. The instructions at
the FS site tell you to copy the unzipped file into two folders. First, the
current version folder under c:\program files, etc., and also to c:\program
files\freedom scientific\shared. Well, I don't have an Eloquence folder
under the shared folder. Am I right in guessing that this is fine, because
I don't have another FS product that also uses Eloquence?if so, I guess I've
done the patch correctly. Thanks again. Do you know if it's true that the
offending word that resembles the name of the Roman emperors is the result
of someone misspelling the medical word "seizure," pretty radically?
Phonetically, I mean? Why would this happen, do you know? It's really a long
way from an ordinary spelling error, more like an English as a second
language problem. Is this something to do with the method of education for
some Jaws users, for instance?

Thanks again,
Daniel

Please, where on the Freedom Scientific site is this patch to be found? Thank you very much. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alicia" <astarner@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, March 31, 2006 7:15 AM Subject: Re: Bad Words for JAWS: Patch Released - Fred's Head Companionarticle

This is a true problem. There is a fix for it on the Freedom Scientific Web Pages.
