Applying styles to a table in Word

Well here is how the story goes, when using the task pane with styles and 
formatting, I am unable to apply my specific formatting from the available 
styles to a table . My trainer is able to apply the formatting when 
dubbel-clicking the desired style, however we are unable to apply the style 
using key-strokes. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated. I am working 
with Jaws 5.0 with Win XP pro and Word 2002
