I'm glad you recognized that we cathode ray-stained wretches call it
highlighted. I haven't any idea when selected came into being.
Let's say you're on a web page and you want to get its address. You hit
alt d. It is now highlighted and you can hit control C to copy. You
didn't nor did you need to select anything. It was highlighted with
either reverse type or a rectangular colored screen.
I use insert shift down arrow to ensure that I've highlighted what I
want to. For example, on MSNBC.com I might copy something. Or I have a
folder full of songs and I want to make sure what I've selected to play
is highlighted.
The key combo has been around since I've known Jaws.

hope you can confirm what I think I've figured out. First of all, just

be clear: Although from personal experience I'm aware that most sighted
computer users habitually refer to selected text as "highlighted" text,
because they see whatever they've selected thrown into relief by being a
different color then unselected text around it, the formal word is
actually
"selected." Unless, that is, you guys haven't meant this at all, and

referring to some other factor that would result in the text being shown
in
a different color, or just brighter or darker. But I opened a Word doc
I'm
working in, and I bolded a word then applied this key combination, and
it
simply said "no text selected." So I conclude that "highlight" is being
used to mean "selected." Yes? That's not quibbling. It's a meaningful
distinction.
Now, if that's what is of concern, here, selected text, do you use this
after, let's say, you've selected a few words, or a paragraph, or
whatever
in a document or in some other environment (maybe on a Web page or
something?) and you want to confirm that you included in your selection
exactly what you want selected, before applying some formatting feature,
or
cutting or copying it?

specifically. But if this is the purpose of Shift Insert down arrow,
it's a

Um...insert 8? Or you could also try hitting insert F and seeing if the
font you are on is highlighted or bold or whatever.

Could someone tell me how you have Jaws announce which block of text is
highlighted in a Word document? I've looked through the Help file and I
