When you use Adobe, you are just bringing up whatever is in the PDF file. Often, the PDF document isn't really text at all, but rather, is a photograph of the text. So, JAWS thinks the document is empty. Technically, it is devoid of text and, therefore, is empty. Sighted users, however, will see text on the screen. Sometimes even sighted users need to look closely to determine whether it is a real PDF document or merely a picture of a document saved in or converted to (often scanned into) PDF format. You need an OCR package to convert the picture into text. Your Kurzweil product is that. It knows there is a picture and either starts the OCR process or waits for you to start it. ________________________________ From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Clark Friedrichs Sent: Wednesday, April 13, 2011 10:18 AM To: JML; vml; Windows 7 Subject: Adobe Folks, Why is it that sometimes I get "Empty Document" when attempting to open a PDF document with Adobe Reader X but it opens fine with Kurzweil 1000?
