The default is to check for updates every 4 hours, and it does slow the system
considerably, but I have it set to update every day at 3 A.M., so no problem
with slowness by the time I get in here. Great little utility! Norton and
McAfee made my system so extremely slow that I ditched both and went with AVG.

Thanks,
Dennis Brown

Oh, gosh, no! Don't fall into the Norton trap. It is not even liked by
sighted computer experts due to how it pervades so much of your operating
system and overloads the CPU processing.

I tossed Norton over 4 years ago and have never regretted it. It (version
2005) was very inaccessible to JAWS so I could not set it up for my needs and
could only helplessly have it run in default.

I'm using AVG Free version 8 and have had no notifications at all.

You report that it is constantly scanning. I only scan when I request, so
that's something you can change in the settings.

      Hello Friends,
Well, for a few weeks now, every day when I first turn my computer on, I
receive a message from AVG stating that I must switch to version 8.5 by April
12, as my current version will no longer receive the latest definitions by that
date.

I am not sure what to do.
It does not mention any charge!

If I have to pay $35, I might as well add 14 and make it $49 and go with
off the shelf Norton.

I used it for 10 years with JAWS, granted I had to route JAWS to PC to
read most of the dialog boxes, but that was so rare, Norton took care of
itself, and my computer also, it caught a few viruses, and in 10 years, I never
had an issue with infections or such.

I think I did have some one help me with the original Install, but after
that, renewing the annual charge for renewal of the definitions downloads was
not a problem with JAWS.

      With Best Regards,

        Hello Alice,

Where did you get 8.5 free? When I clicked on the update it said you
had to pay $35.

Has anyone downloaded the new AVG free 8.5?
I did, and now, it seems that AVG is running scans for hours
every day. I guess this should make me feel all safe and protected from viruses
and other goodies, but while this is going on, JAWS stutters and hitches up and
locks up, and it's really hard to get anything done.
Anyone else noticing this? Are there any settings I can change to
encourage JAWS to keep performing even when these scans are running in the
background?
          Thanks,
          Alice
