I've had similar issues with a computer at work.
It turned out my problem was that my setting were on a FAP server which was changed and so JAWS couldn't find my user settings. It caused it to do really strange things including announcing space and paragraph characters in Word, not reading menus properly, and basically getting stranger as time went on.
What was strange was that it got worse over time after the server change, it didn't all just go wrong straight away.
Anyway, our IT guys pointed JAWS back in the right direction of the settings and all is well.
One other issue I have found with JAWS on my computer at work, is locking the PC. If I lock the PC to go away from my desk, JAWS then has problems once I log back on. 

I've been advised not to lock it it, but restart it every time.

You probably need to unload and reload JAWS every time you boot up your computer for JAWS to read properly. I understand that when your computer first boots up JAWS is running in service mode and does not work as it should. To stop it from running in service mode, I unload it and then reload it and that does the trick.

I just got my computer upgraded at work, I have jaws 8.1, and I have WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL, AND MICROSOFT WORD IS 2003, I HAVE problems using it, because at the beginning, it will just read anything in word, for a while, and then it won't , so I have to use control and up arrow to use it, how can I fix it so i won't have that probelm, also when i tab, with alt, it will read everything with alt, and tab, or alt and window, how can i fix this, also I lose focus on jawsand pc curser, can someone help. jose
