I think it is something to do with the sound card itself.  From following 
this thread for a while, it sounds like the other program is taking over the 
sound card and driving Jaws out of the way.

Being a laptop it's hard to put a new sound card in.  Have you had the same 
trouble on a tower or desktop computer?  Are you able to test it on one if 
not?
