that is the way I work too.
My wife is a designer too and she does graphics and color design for me as 
well as mind map for websites.
Because this is a must too.
The mind map is the way to arange the information in such a way that the 
user flows naturaly, usually, from an information to another.
Also is the way how you atract an user to see a thing.
If you want him to see an information you can do some color design in that 
corner, little different from the rest of the site and you will see that the 
user imediately looks there.
Also the oposite is true, you have to pay attention, to distracte not the 
user attention from the important information with different designs where 
is not needed, or with plenty of annimated things.
This are things bassed on sight and we can not know how a thing will work.
