The reason NVDA doesn't use something better than espeak is that there
isn't anything better that is also free.  NVDA can use sapi5 voices if
you have them, though not nearly to the degree that the commercial
packages do.  For instance NVDA is limited to using just a single
voice, rather than being able to use different voices as indicators of
capitalization and such.  I am actually somewhat surprised that
progress on the synth side is so slow, but OSS synth AFAIK   Are you
aware of better packages?simply remains atrocious.
