For the CSUN 2009 conference next March in Los Angeles, I am submitting a
proposal for an inaugural event called Dueling Scripting. The latest
draft of the proposal is pasted below.
I have invited Dolphin, Freedom Scientific, GW Micro, and Sun to select a
participant to represent their screen readers. So far, GW Micro has
agreed. Freedom Scientific has been in communication with me, has not
been able to arrange for a JAWS participant, but has encouraged me to
contact this list in search of someone. Sun is considering the matter and
has not decided (the Orca screen reader). I have not heard from Dolphin,
though Sean Farrow has expressed interest in participating with Hal.
If anyone on this list, or anyone you know, would like to participate as a
JAWS scripter, please let me know. Feel free to ask questions, either on
or off list. More information about the conference is at

Regards,
Jamal
Title: Dueling Scripting
Abstract: Custom scripts can increase support by a screen reader for
computer applications that are otherwise difficult for blind persons to
use. Experienced scripters perform assigned tasks with different screen
readers.
Type: Demonstration
Equipment: Windows PC, Linux PC, and Internet Access
Length : 120 minutes (e.g., preconference session)
Level: Intermediate
Topic: Blind/Low Vision
Summary:
Dueling Scripting
Moderator: Jamal Mazrui

To improve support for a sight and mouse-oriented application, settings of
a screen reader may be customized in various ways, including menu-driven
and scripting techniques. Often, a solution may be achieved in multiple
ways. Scripting is more complex and difficult for users to do themselves.
They usually do not care how a solution from others is developed, however,
as long as it works.
Scripting is more powerful, so it sometimes can create solutions that are
not available with default or menu-driven settings. For years, JAWS was
the only scriptable screen reader for applications with a graphical user
interface (GUI). Now Window-Eyes and HAL are also scriptable screen
readers on the Windows platform, and Orca is on Gnome (Linux or Solaris).
This session is analogous to previous CSUN events named Dueling Windows,
Dueling Scanners, or Dueling Operating Systems: showcasing choices for
consumers through a spirited, constructive contest. Experienced scripters
will perform the same, assigned tasks with different screen readers. The
scripters are to be selected in consultation with producers of the screen
readers they use. Audience members will pose questions as well as the
moderator.
Consensus guidelines for the tasks to be demonstrated will be developed
through discussion among participants and the moderator. Some relatively
simple tasks will be assigned impromptu during the event. Other, more
involved ones will be assigned in advance so participants can come with
prepared solutions.

Scripting typically includes the following capabilities:
* Define hotkeys that interact with an application and speak messages
* Query windows on the screen for properties such as text, selection, or
state
* Monitor events such as window activation and respond with particular
actions
* Program with the API of an application to perform actions not available
with built-in functions of the scripting language
Other components of screen reader scripting include learning resources,
developer tools, and distribution mechanisms. The infrastructure and
community play important roles in the scriptability of a screen reader.
