There is a function in the default scripts file called SelectingText
which handles all of this processing. All of the scripts that select
text call this function.

Questions here without answers or testing:
1. If one starts with selecting to the left and then hits the shift
right what occurs?
I can't remember my systems but I think in some cases the extension is
then expanded in the other direction and in other cases the last item
selected is de-selected.
If it is the later case, do you need to track how many hcars are
selected and what direction one is going? Then if direction reverses
instead of saying selected you would say unselected and drop the count
by one.
Best,
Jon
