Hi david.
Man I'm not sure how to exactly communicate this to you, and I only do so
publicly in case I'm totally off the mark, or in case anyone else would like
to perhaps modify my thoughts re your question below.
But, since few have so far sought to respond to your post below, I will
offer my thoughts for what they may be worth.
I understand you to say you have two requests really:
1. you have some programs already installed that you reeeally would like to
be able to use more easily/independently, but which are proving problematic
for you to use right now without scripts.
and that you are asking for people to quote some kind of ballpark figure for
you, re what it might cost to have someone manually write scripts for you
which might more easily facilitate independent usage for you of these
particular programs.
2. you are asking for any feedback as to whether anyone knows if the
programs found on a particular website, have jaws Scripts written for them
or not.
and if not, whether anyone could just start writing them?
well, Firstly, My own thoughts about two of the particular programs you
mentioned as desirous of being able to get scripts for. one was a registry
cleaner program, and the other was a registry defragmenter program.
I'm just wondering, might it not be wiser, certainly would be a whole lot
cheaper/more practical, to try and find programs that do the jobs you want,
that other vips might already be successfully using?
I realize you might've thought that was what you were trying to do by asking
whether anyone knew whether jaws scripts had been written for programs on
the SaveMyButt site,
But, I think this is kind of a different question really.
For example,
I use a free registry cleaner called CCleaner,
http://www.cCleaner.com
which is now quite a bit more keyboard accessible than it once was.
David, I myself am only the most very very introductory level basic of jaws
scripters, I don't even deserve to be called a real scripter yet, so please
do take these thoughts with a grain of salt until confirmed/denied by any of
the more professionals up here,
but, your post suggest to me that
perhaps not yet being a scripter yourself I take it, I think that perhaps
you may not be aware, of just what a huge task it usually is, to write jaws
scripts to make a program really speech friendly and accessible.
like It's usually not something anyone just takes on lightly and could knock
over in an hour or two.
For a start, a blind person has to try and study, and learn, how the program
does what it does, what it's interface is like, and how the sighted person
is expected to drive it, before they can even hope to assess, just how
difficult the program may, or may not be, to make more accessible via
scripts.
And this process alone usually takes considerable time/work, as you might
imagine, to "scope out."
let alone actually producing a useable end result that is going to suit the
customer.
Does this make sense?
of course, it depends on the complexity of what the program is meant to do,
but, ... you begin to see my point?
And then, what happens if the next version of the program comes out, and
they just go and change the interface, and effectively break all the work
someone has done to get the program useable in it's previous incarnation!
The only time really, that you find free scripts written for programs that
are made available to other people to use, is when a scripter her/himself,
is using the program, and wants to make it more accessible for themselves,
and so puts in the hours and hours and days of their free time, for mainly
their own benefit, and if anyone else gains from that work, then it's a
bonus for the others.
Because, when one tries to write solid scripts that are going to be like
more reliable across a wide range of users, this in my experience/knowledge,
is quite a bit more work to seek to, "plug up ," all the potential holes,
than one might bother to do, if one is just hacking together something for
oneself.
Like you, just so I had some idea,
I once asked a pro scripter up here, what kind of money they would charge
per hour to embark on writing scripts, and like it was in the order of $100
per hour!
And that was a couple of years ago.
now admittedly, they were pretty top in their field, but, yeah.
But, even if it was in the order of $30 per hour, can you begin to see just
how this could just turn into hundreds of dollars real fast, with no
definite promise unless it was scoped out and quoted on first, that a
satisfactory result could even be obtained?
Does this help you to perhaps begin to see now,
how really impractical it is likely to be, for a home user,
to ever be thinking of being able to lay out such sums of money?
especially when one has no idea how difficult any given program is going to
be, to script satisfactorily?
and perhaps why people haven't really much tried to even begin to address
your post on this?
Now if you believe you have access to the sums we're talking about, that
could be used for this purpose, then I'm sure you could ask onlist, how you
might go about getting a realistic quote from anyone, on, say, one
particular program, and whether people would need to charge to quote on
writing scripts for it, as I suspect they might.
really, practically speaking,
I reckon Only large companies or governmental agencies could ever really
afford to lay out these kinds of sums.
Now if I'm way off the mark here, perhaps others could chime in and adjust
these thoughts.
I leave the floor open for comment.
But, personally, David I reckon you'd be waay better off, trying to find
software to do the jobs you need, that people have either already written
scripts for,
or that people have found reasonably accessible out of the box, all-be-it
using the jaws Cursor to stumble around
with to click on things?
I.e. people up here might have some good websites where jaws users might be
exchanging such information as to accessible software. and if So, I too
would like to hear about such forums or sites.
Of course, being heavily involved in it's development,
I would recommend if you haven't already, to try messing with
HotSpotClicker,
http://www.hotspotclicker.org
with some sighted assistance, and seeing what joy you may be able to bring
to your programs with that?
it certainly won't do the job a professionally scripted program will do,
but, it just may be able to provide yuou with enough access to get you by,
depending, again, on just what needs to be done, and how inaccessible the
particular interfaces are to begin with.
I hope this hasn't been a too gloomy picture I've painted here David.
And, please others who might have some other ideas for how david might
proceed on this, plese do chime in!
geoff c.

Subject: [jawsscripts] I need some jaws scripts written for different
programs?
> Hi list members, i'd like to know if someone could write some jaws scripts
for me i have different programs that need jaws scripts written for them. I
have the nokia pc suite version 6.8.2.27, i have a free registery cleaner
program, i also havea registery defragmenter program, These are just some of
the programs that i need jaws scripts written for. There are some others as
well. I'd like to know if there will be a price to write the jaws scripts.
I'm using jaws versions 4.51, 6.2, and 8.0. I would appreciate any
information that anyone has thank you. P.S. If anyone has gone to
www.savemybutt.com and looked at the different programs in the downloads
section, can anyone please tell me which programs have jaws scripts written
for them and which ones have not. If not could some one please write jaws
scripts for these programs? Thank you.
