The methode {escape} does work. The particular dialogue where this failed is 
an odd-ball.

Hi James,
This is puzzling since I have successfully sent an Escape key from a
script using the methods Dennis mentioned.  Standard dialogs with a
Cancel button treat the Escape key as if the user clicked that button.
Are you sure the dialog has focus when you send that keystroke?
