it is different for different combo boxes because combo boxes may be
implemented differently on each page.
First, as to jumping off and selecting the first item in the box before you
can arrow down further, this is because javascript is activated on the
selected item and fires when the selection is highlighted. To prevent jaws
from doing this, you need to first go into forms mode then hit
alt+downarrow. Then you can arrow as you please and the selection won't get
activated until you hit enter or go out of forms mode.
As for the arrow keys not working on some boxes, I'm not sure what you
mean -- some combo boxes have a dummy slot at the top that says something
like "--- select an item---" and you need to arrow down to find the choices.
But a general rule with combo boxes, when you don't know how it is
implemented, assume you need to use the alt+downarrow mentioned above for it
to work. It won't hurt if you don't need it, and will save you an unwanted
page transition if you do need it.

Subject: [JAWSLite] still having trouble with combo boxes
Hi,
When I visit various web sites, if I press enter to turn on forms mode to
hear the selections in a combo box, sometimes Jaws reads my available
options, while other times Jaws says nothing and the arrow keys do not move
up or down. Still at other times, if I down arrow to hear an option, the
page jumps and moves as if I had decided to select the first available
option.
I have tried pressing alt plus left, right, down and up arrow keys, but Jaws
says nothing. When this happens, the only way I can hear my options and
choose the one I want is to go into Jaws mode and then press the left mouse
key on the selection I want to make.
I am using Jaws 7.1, the latest in 7 that is available and Internet Explorer
7.
Is there any way I can get my combo boxes to behave consistently where I can
hear my options before selecting the one I want?
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Lauren
